The State Government places great emphasis on the welfare of Women. Her Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu in her address to the State Assembly mentioned the progress of "Mahalir Thittam".

Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announce the extension of Mahalir Thittam to town panchayats and municipalities of the state in his Budget speech for 2007-2008. All schemes for women would be clubbed under the banner of 'Vazhthu Kattuvom' with direct super vision of Chief Minister's Secretariat with an overall allocation of Rs.120 Crores(Paras 94-96 of budget). Hon. Chief Minister also announced the renaming of the scheme as BANGARU AMMAIYAAR NINAIVU MAHALIR THITTAM (in memory of the Late CM Arignar Anna's mother).

Hon. Minister for Social Welfare in her policy notes on Rural Development for 2007 - 2008 has dealt with the various schemes implemented by DeW currently and provision of funds for under various heads for 2000-2001(Chapter-3 of Policy Note for SW and NMP department.

The Government have also announced formation of NGO & Volunteer Resource Center which would act as a nodal agency to built capacity of each NGOs, guide new NGOs and promote volunteers and the spirit of volunteerism in the state.
